Maieusthesia is an innovative approach to communication and psychotherapy . It was created by French psychotherapist Thierry Tournebise in the 1980s. After developing his approach for over 20 years, Thierry named it “Maieusthésie” (in French) in 2000. The term "Maieusthesia" is derived from the Greek word "maieutikê" (meaning “the art of giving birth") and "aisthanesthai" (indo-european, meaning "to feel, to perceive").
The combination of the two words defines the art of being sensitive and perceptive to the emergence of the Self. Since its creation more than 40 years ago, the approach has gained momentum and popularity in France, Switzerland, Belgium and Canada. Maieusthesia is part of experiential, humanistic and existential approaches.
Maieusthesia aims to explore and reestablish a communication between disconnected parts of your psyche. When particularly difficult or challenging events occur in your life, there is an impulse to cut off or disassociate from parts of the self that have been hurt. This disconnection often results in symptoms ("Is Maieusthesia for me?"). Instead of fighting against these symptoms, Maieusthesia acknowledges their pertinence and helps identify, understand and reconcile the disconnected parts of your psyche. Symptoms then become irrelevant and disappear, allowing you to achieve inner peace, gain self-awareness and move towards accomplishing your full potential to live a more fulfilling life.
This approach is particularly efficient in investigating, dealing with and resolving the effects of trauma, be it ancient (from your childhood) or recent. It has been used to treat a wide range of problems, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, insomnia, addictions and relationship issues. Maieusthesia is also used in the workplace to help people develop their communication and leadership skills.
Maieusthesia has proven its efficacy in the following areas:
